Silver is one of the most elegant and versatile materials in jewelry. However, over time it tends to oxidize and lose its shine if not properly cared for. At La Platería, we have been helping our customers keep their jewelry in perfect condition for over 80 years, and today we want to share our most useful tips with you.

Why does silver tarnish? Silver reacts with sulfur present in the air and in some everyday products such as perfumes, creams, and cleaning products. The result is that dark layer that appears over time and, although it doesn't damage the jewelry, it diminishes its shine and beauty.

The first tip is also the simplest: wear them frequently. Contact with the skin naturally slows down oxidation. Jewelry stored in a drawer oxidizes much faster than jewelry worn daily. To clean them at home, the most effective method is to use lukewarm water with a few drops of mild soap and a soft cloth or a very fine-bristled toothbrush. Rub gently, rinse well, and dry immediately with a dry cloth. Never leave them damp, as moisture accelerates oxidation. Avoid contact with harsh chemicals: bleach, household cleaning products, pool chlorine, or even some hand soaps. Ideally, remove your jewelry before showering, exercising, or cooking. To store them, the best option is a dust bag or a closed case, keeping each piece separate to prevent scratches. Adding a piece of chalk or flannel inside the jewelry box helps absorb moisture. If your jewelry already has a significant layer of tarnish or has set stones, do not use homemade abrasive products without consulting us first. In that case, the safest option is to bring it to our workshop, where we will restore it to like-new condition. At La Platería, we have our own workshop in our stores in Alcázar de San Juan and Tomelloso. Contact us for a free consultation.
